I Have A Black Labrador Retriever Puppy…She Is Gaining Weight? 10 Points?
I have a 9 month old black Labrador Retriever who is mix with a Beagle. Is it normal for her to gain weight and look a little wide? I've had ppl ask me if she was expecting. And I was offended for my puppy. She only eats two meals a day. One in the morning and another meal early in the evening. She eats the Science Diet food" the dry food. I also give hear treats. Maybe twice a day. But my dad sometimes gives one too many. The name of her treats is "Purina Beneful" the veggie kind of treats.
Is this normal for her to gain weight? I also take her for walks and we do jog. I take her on walks everyday. I even let her run around. She has alot of energy so she will run around the house also.
So why is she gaining weight? Why is she looking wide? I thought maybe she was buff and it had to deal with her genes because maybe her dad or mom was very thick and buff. She is also verrrrrrrrrry strong. I mean she is super strong for a 9 month old pup. She literally drags me down the street.
Exercise is best…try bringing her somewhere off leash so she can run more! and play fetch with her!
Also there is a chance that she is an english lab. They tend to be thicker and shorter, where as the american labs are taller and leaner.
I have 2 black labs, both females, one is young and super skinny and all muscle (she is an american lab) and the other is a little wide in the abdomen (she is half english), the young one eats significantly more and exercises about the same, yet the english one looks chubbier.
I think your puppy is perfectly normal. At your next vet check up if the doctor says anything about her weight then think of changing things around, but until then keep the exercise going and she should be just fine!
Also ignore those people who ask if she is pregnant or say she is fat….I am sure she is perfect and adorable!
Good Luck!

Both Science Diet and Beneful are terrible products. I recommend switching to a higher quality food such as Innova or Orijen and making sure she gets plenty of exercise.

It is normal for puppy's to gain weight as they get older they are still growing. She may just be having a growth spurt, kinda like people. If it becomes more rapid I would take her to the vet to have her checked out, their may be a medical problem.

Recommended daily amount: 2.5 to 3 cups of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.
