Does my labrador have to be registered to be shown?
This may be a stupid question, but does my black labrador have to have AKC papers to be shown? We got him through a rescue because his owner died but we recently found out that he showed up on his previous owners porch, meaning that it would be impossible to track his parents, which i think is required to get him registered? Anyways we would be interested in showing him if possible. Also, if he does have to be registered are there any shows that don't require this? TY!
Yep…he's nuetered. (Spelling…idk ;D)
Not a stupid question.
Your dog may get a number from AKC that will allow him to compete in performance events.
You may apply for a PAL number from the AKC.
This will allow your dog to compete in AKC performance events such as Obedience, Rally, Agility, etc.
Your dog must be spayed or neutered to get their PAL.

DJL is right, and again not a stupid question! and the categories it can compete in are wonderful for labs to do

If you're interested in showing in AKC conformation (breed ring) then yes, he has to be registered with the AKC. If you're interested in showing in obedience, agility, or other performance events, you can get an ILP if your dog is neutered. You can also compete in venues other than the AKC, but not in breed ring, which is intended for proving breeding stock.

Yes, your dog needs to be registered with AKC in order to show in the conformation ring and he needs to be left intact. Being that you rescued him from a rescue group, he is already neutered, which would disqualify him from being shown. Conformation shows evaluate breeding stock, not how cute a dog is.

Yes he does have to be registered.. and also intact.
If you are under 18, you can get an ILP/PAL registry thru either AKC or UKC to show him under Jr Showmanship..
Your lab can also compete under all other non-conformation events with an ILP/PAL registration.. including obedience, agility, etc.
The dog does have to be neutered to get this registration..
