What Smaller Dog Breeds Have Similar Personalities to Labradors?

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

I’m moving into a townhouse, and I really love Labs. The place I’ll be living has a 40lb weight limit. I’d like to know what dog breeds have similar personality traits. I particularly like the really loving and loyal aspect of their personalities.

Papillons are active, like Labradors, and generally outgoing, like Labradors. They can be a little more yippy than a Labrador though.

What about looking for a Lab mix at a shelter? There are plenty of tiny Lab mixes that are only about thirty or forty pounds. They look and act like Labs- just smaller!

This dog, for example: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17227483

Shih Tzus and Cavailier Spaniels also have very outgoing personalities. Beagles might be another good bet.

Do Yellow, Chocolate, and Black Labradors Have Different Personalities?

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

I want to Get a Labrador and I was wondering if they have different personalities, I don’t care what color it is.

Each individual dog has his own personality, just as each individual human does, color does not make any difference at all.

Can Registered Black Labradors Have a Small Amount Off White on Them?

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I have a black lab puppy down her chest is a white line as she’s gotten bigger her white line has gotten smaller.

Yes, it happens. But if it’s larger than, say, a quarter it is considered a mismark, which means the dog could not be shown.

Here are some other common mismarks

Do Silver Labradors Have More Health Problems Because of Their Color and Genetic Make Up?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I’m wanting to a Labrador puppy. I love the silver colored ones, but I’m sure if they will be more pron to getting disorders. If anyone could point me towards a good Labrador breeder in Texas that would be great as well. Thank You!

There are no known health problems associated with color in Labradors.

A recessive gene for the dilution affect is responsible for the lighter coloring. Charcoal results from the dilution of black and Silver results from the dilution of chocolate http://www.vetdnacenter.com/canine-dna-coat-color.html

There are actually plenty of examples of AKC registered silver and charcoal labrador retrievers… http://www.charcoalandsilverlabs.com …even though it is considered a disqualification by the breed standard. At one time in the breed’s history chocolate was also considered a fault.

The subject is one of great debate among breeders although there are also several other recessive traits and disorders that should hold greater weight when making breeding decisions.

How Long Are Female Labradors on Heat for Their First Cycle?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I know most people say three weeks, however my 11 mth old lab was showing signs of going on heat for about a week and has been bleeding for further three weeks. Just when I think it’s stopped, sure enough I find more spots.

She used to spending a lot of time inside so I resorted to buying her a ‘nappy’ because I have carpet throughout.

I’m telling you, this is her first and last heat cycle!

The cycle lasts for 3 weeks normally, but that does not mean she will show blood for that entire time. During the last week she will not have a bloddy discharge, but may still be mated and get pregnant, so the utmost care for her entire 3 weeks is essential.

What’s the Differences Between Golden Retrievers and Labradors?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Apart from the obvious coat and colour differences, how do their energy levels and temperaments compare?

Had both! I loved them so differently. My black lab mix was as tough as nails and loved to be outside as much as possible until 7 yrs old. Belly on the ice with a smile. He lived to be almost 15. My Golden was more gentle and obsessed with my bed but still excitable with lots of zest until cancer hit her at 12. Goldens tend to get cancer between 7 and 12! I think I will get a lab or mix next time. Mixes tend to live longer healthier lives. How about a mix of the two?

If I Raise Labradors With Chickens From Birth Will Them Be Less Likely to Hunt the Chickens?

Monday, April 19th, 2010

i have an acre, free range chickens, 20 of them, with 2 roosters. Getting some yellow labs, if i get them used to the chickens while theyre young and try to stop them from hunting, will it really stop them from killing chickens in the future?

It would depend on the dogs lineage and how well you integrate the two species.

My aunts Springer lived with chickens ever since she was 8 weeks old, but she could not be trusted with them. My Springer only ever encounters chickens say times a year and isn’t fussed on them, she’ll happily lay in the garden with them and won’t bother to even look at them. Both dogs are working dogs.

I think it will be pot look. Get the dogs used to spending time with the chickens individually- two dogs increases the pray drive. You might be ok, you might not.

Why Does My Labradors Retriever Mix Always Have to Have a Paw on Me or My Husband?

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Why does my Labradors Retriever mix always have to have a paw on me or my husband? He lays between us with his head on one of us and his paw on the other.

My aunts dog is the same way, always has to be cuddled up to their owner. Its a mommy-daddy relationship type thing. They just want to be with you, and they feel safer when you’re with them.

Do Labradors and German Shepherd Dogs Tend to Get on Ok?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Due to some ‘family issues’ we are getting a 12 week old German Shepherd Dog. We already have an 8 month old Golden Labrador Dog. As a ‘general rule’ will this work? Will they get on ok or fight like crazy… Im curious as to what we have let ourselves in for. They are both males.

It just depends on your dogs temperament! all dogs are different.
Just try them out and wait and see. Don’t shove your German Shepard in your Labradors face. Let them slowly greet!
