Labrador Rescue Dog Training

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Have you ever wondered how rescue dog training worked? After all, they are able to find victims, regardless as to whether they are alive or dead, whenever a tragedy or disaster strikes.

A Dog’s Ability For Rescue Dog Training

There are some dogs who have a magnificent sense of smell. Since they are smaller than humans, they can also penetrate small areas where humans cannot reach. All of this, combined with their rescue dog training, makes them well worth the praise they get. This is especially true because they think that this work is fun.

An important part of rescue dog training is teaching these dogs to be focused on the task at hand, regardless of what else may be going on around them. Of course, different breeds of dogs are better able to do this. For this reason, different dogs have different jobs. A Bloodhound is renowned for their ability as a search dog while Newfoundland’s are used in avalanche rescues and Labrador Retrievers are the absolute best cadaver dog in the world. You will also find that German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Golden Retrievers are also very good at tracking and following scents.

It is highly recommended that dogs who love to play participate in rescue dog training because they will do anything to receive a reward.

How Rescue Dog Training Works

Rescue dog training focuses upon a dog’s sense of smell. With their sense of smell they are able to pick out a target odor amongst millions of different odors. So, whenever a dog is tracking a person, it will focus upon the scent of skin cells that come off of the human body. They can even be sensed in the water in cases of drownings. In rescue dog training these dogs are trained to sniff the air and follow the scent to find the victim.

Of course there are other things that a rescue dog is trained to look for. In rescue dog training, a dog is also trained to take the right position so that the rescue can be executed. From there, a dog must also learn how to use everything that is has been trained to do as a single exercise. Another important part of rescue dog training is for the human to learn how to read the dog’s eyes. Since a dog’s eyes can be very expressive it can also read the handler’s mood. This is 1 of the many non-verbal signals that a dog will learn during its rescue dog training.

My Labrador Retriever Won’t Play Fetch. How Can I Get Her to Play Feltch?

Friday, February 11th, 2011

She is a retriever and she won’t pick up anything I through. She goes to it sometimes but gets shy about picking it up. She is 6 months old and is a rescue puppy. I would like to train her as a bird dog. But, without this simple game, I won’t have much to work with. She executes all basic commands with little trouble. Please, help.

Fetching can be a fun game that you and your puppy can enjoy throughout your life together.
An easy and fun way to start teaching your dog to play fetch is to use the two-toy fetch method. Get two identical dog toys that your dog can be crazy about. These toys can be a plush dog toy or a bouncy ball; even a tennis ball works well. The idea is to playfully tease your dog with one of the toys and then throw it a ways from you. Make sure to not throw it too far at the beginning, keep it close until your dog learns. As soon as your dog goes to get the toy, call out praise and then when she retrieves the toy call her back to you and show her the other toy. She will probably run back to you to get the other toy. As soon as she gets close, take the first toy away from her and throw the second toy. She will then run after it and you can start the process over again.
Start slowly and build up over time. Fetching balls can be good exercise so let your dog acclimate to the increased activity. Make sure your dog still wants to play fetch when you stop for the day!
Do not use the fetch toys for any other purpose than to play fetch. It will confuse your dog if she can play with the toys at home but must fetch the toys when you are at the park!
If your dog has no interest in retrieving toys, you can create a positive association and still teach her to fetch the toys. Every time she picks up the toy reward her with a small treat. It will take time and repetitions before this really kicks in for her but you will create a desire to fetch for you by using the treats as a reward.
With a little time and patience you will have a well-trained dog to play fetch with and you both can enjoy the game for years to come.
Have fun!

My 8 Month Old Black Labrador Retriever Is VERY Missed Behaved and Be Still Bits. Is This Normal?

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

When we bought our dog we knew labs were a very active dog. Our dog , Jake, is 8 months old now and he’s still very missed behaved. He climbs things bites ( not hard but it still hurts ) steals stuff and brakes every thing. We love him and he’s perfectly potty trained and stuff but is this biting and other stuff normal?
Please help

This is normal for a dog who hasn’t had proper training. Have you considered taking obedience classes to help you know how to deal with your dog?

American and English Labrador Retrievers Are Both of Them Able to Be AKC Papered?

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Are they both considered pure bred? I want to get a puppy and the breeder told me one parent is American and one is English. Does that mean the puppy is still pure bred?

A lot of people in the US incorrectly use the terms "American" and "English" to distinguish between a field bred, hunting-type Lab, and a "show" type Lab. There are generally physical differences between the two "types" BUT THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME BREED.

If both parents are AKC registered, the pups can be AKC registered as well.

More *accurate* information about the "distinction" between the two types:
